An evaluation of the effectiveness of adoption and implementation of FAIR (Finable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data management principles in research – a case study of the University of Southern Queensland

A heightened global recognition of the importance of effectively managing research data through adoption of FAIR (Finable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles is necessitating change in practice by institutions and researchers. This study contributes to an understanding of the opportunities and challenges that face researchers and research institutions as they attempt to adopt and adapt FAIR data management principles in research. By applying both quantitative and qualitative approaches, the study presents new findings on the adoption and implementation of FAIR data management principles in research through a case study of the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). The study applies a reflective practitioner methodology in undertaking the work of implementing FAIR principles at USQ. The implementation entails an update of USQ’s Research Code of Conduct Policy and Research Data and Primary Materials Management Procedure, and a FAIR upgrade on research practice and published research data. The study will contribute to understanding FAIR implementation by evaluating USQ’s journey. The study makes important theoretical and practical contributions to the area of research data management, FAIR policies and principles, FAIR practice. The case study will provide value to researchers, research institutions, funding and regulatory agencies as well as Government departments in their efforts to increase the utility, quality and impact of research data.
